TANZANIA

The Greatest Show on Earth

The Great Migration that cycles the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem in East Africa is one of the most spectacular natural events on our planet. Timing and location are key to hit the herds just right, but Sam has lived in the Serengeti for years, and has got this down to a fine art.

Zebra and wildebeest brave a crocodile attack to cross the famous Mara River. The grass is always greener.

DAY 1 - Arusha

Arrive into Arusha, the gateway to northern Tanzania’s safari lands. The incredible Legendary Lodge, set in a coffee plantation on the edge of Arusha, offers the perfect place to recoup and recharge after an international flight before your safari commences the following day.

DAYS 2-4 - Ngorongoro Crater

Head out on safari to the world famous Ngorongoro Crater. This is Africa’s Garden of Eden, with over 50,000 animals condensed into a natural amphitheater, and home to the greatest density of lions on the continent. The incredible Ngorongoro Crater Lodge sits right on the edge of the crater rim, overlooking a 600m drop onto the animal-filled plains below.

Depending on the specific time of year, Singita Faru Faru is a fantastic base the witness both the Great Migration and excellent big cat sightings. Then relax around an open fire and recount the memories made that day.

DAYS 4-7 - Serengeti (north)

Fly over the Great Rift Valley and on to traverse the endless plains that make up the Serengeti National Park. In the northern reaches of the park winds the Mara river, a natural barrier that the herds face on their migration. They must cross it to reach better grazing. This results in some spectacular viewing as they take the plunge into the river, full of huge crocodiles. They risk their life each time they attempt it. It sometimes takes hours or even days to build up the courage to take a leap of faith into the swirling currents. Three nights in the northern Serengeti at somewhere such as Nomad Lamai are not three days you would ever forget.

Cheetah are a relatively common sight around the Serengeti, if you know where to look. This family had been caught out by an afternoon thunderstorm.

DAYS 7-10 - Serengeti (South)

Fly down from the northern reaches of the Serengeti right down to the southern, on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Here in the private Mwiba Reserve is somewhere you have a lot more freedom. Night drives looking for leopards, walking safaris following herds of buffalo and cultural interactions with the Hadzabe bushmen, some of the last hunter gatherers on the continent, are just a few of the incredible experiences you will have here. Mwiba Lodge is of exceptionally high quality, and somewhere that always delivers an incredible experience. You won’t want to leave, but after your time here it is a very easy short flight back to Kilimanjaro to connect internationally.
